A fascinating and really well done interactive music video from The Arcade Fire, all done without Flash. I don't think there is anything else like this on the web right now.

Put in the address of your childhood home or some other location and the video seamlessly cuts footage of that location into the video. And you guys thought Goole driving around destroying everybody's privacy with their Street View cars was a waste of time.

Apropos of the release of Toy Story 3 today, and in lieu of me writing any original content, you may wish to review my list of Pixar film rankings that you don't agree with. I've had the chance to see Up a few times since that list was written and I'm going to go ahead and put it at number two.

So, what of TS3? Will it succumb to the Star Trek curse (odd numbered sequels always stink up the joint (of course in this case the even-numbered sequel was a let down, so maybe it's the reverse of Star Trek)) or will it be the greatest thing since the original? Let me know. We plan to see it ~~next~~ this weekend.

I present to you a sample page from the kids' homework this week. For question #3 they had to identify which item weighs the least. Both kids got it wrong.

Whether or not they could have figured out the relative weights of these objects, consider for a moment the life of a 5 year old in the 21st century: Phones are cordless and wireless and small enough to fit in your pocket. Not having worked in an office you have likely never seen a phone with one of those funny squiggly cords (except maybe at Grandma's house).

Computers are tiny and are more likely to be laptops or tablets or wireless phones than PCjr-era desktop machines with huge CRT monitors. In fact, you've never even seen a CRT monitor. You may have encountered a desktop-type computer but if it was anything other than just a big LCD monitor with a keyboard then it was almost certainly a tower-style design and not a wide flat blob on the desktop.

Speaking of desktops, paper planners are an unknown concept as well.

This whole question appears to have been designed in 1960 and carried forward unchanged ever since. And you people think the biggest problem facing our schools is the cutback of a few teachers.

We're goin' solar! And by that I do not mean that we are ritualistically launching ourselves into the dying sun in order to appease the ancient rites of sacrifice. (So if that's what you were thinking, just forget it.) Rather, we are getting solar panels installed on the roof so that instead of the sun's only purpose being to slowly kill me by way of skin cancer it will also be powering our home, at least partially.

We talked to a couple of contractors, both of whom were very professional and took the time to answer all our questions. We decided to go with local Elk Grove company Go Solar. Our system will consist of seventeen 230W Solar World panels with Enphase micro-inverters at each panel for a total nominal output of 3.3kW AC and an estimated annual production of 5,663 kWh. For reference we consumed a total of 13,719 kWh in the last 12 months so this will by no means get us off the grid, but it will take a healthy bite out of our usage. The meter will run backwards when we are generating more than we are using.

After state (paid by SMUD) and federal rebates / credits the system is actually pretty affordable and since the usable lifespan of the system is upwards of 30 years it will be paying for itself within a decade or less.

I'll have more details here as we move along. Right now we're in the planning and permitting stage. Installation should begin within two weeks and be completed within a few days after that. Then once the power company signs off on it we'll be ready to throw the master switch and enter the world of the sun-powered future.

I put a fresh coat of paint on the walls, as you may have noticed (or not, as the case may be). I think it's a change for the better, but you can feel free to gouge your eyes out in disgust if you choose to. The same inane content will remain so no help there, sorry.

The layout should render reasonably well in your browser but if it does something unusual like display everything in bright yellow text, or crash your browser, or make your pubic hair fall out or something then please do let me know. While that third possibility is unlikely, I feel it best to warn you that an early beta version did cause some unusual problems, the details of which I do not want to get in to.

Also, credit where credit is due: this layout was inspired by Garrett Murray's maniacal rage, only his is better designed. For a good time, go read his Adobe Photoshop crash reports.
